Frankenmuth company purchases local milling company – The Morning Sun

A Frankenmuth milling company has purchased an Isabella County milling company and the four facilities that it owns.

Star of the West Milling Co. announced its purchase of Brown Milling Co. in a press release dated Jan. 17.

“This acquisition bolsters key capabilities for Star of the West while further expanding our presence in our home state,” said Jim Howe, president and CEO of Star of the West Milling Company, in the press release. “Brown Milling and Star of the West share much in common, starting with a commitment to Michigan’s farmers and to our employees. Today’s announcement positions Star of the West to continue the world-class service that Brown Milling Co. has been known for across central Michigan.”

The purchase includes four facilities owned by Brown: Brown Milling Co., 8731 E. Rosebush Road; Superior Fertilizer, 3761 E. Weidman Road; Rosebush Feed & Grain, 3751 E. Rosebush Road; and Shepherd Elevator, 414 W. Wright Ave.

“After 56 years of service to Michigan agriculture and careful consideration by the Brown family, we have decided to place Brown Milling, Inc. in the hands of another longstanding Michigan business, Star of the West Milling Company,” said Ron Brown, President of Brown Milling, Inc., in the press release. “Our two companies have served our respective customers and employees with pride, and this match will keep central Michigan agriculture moving forward.”

One local agriculture official said that purchase was a good move.

“I think it is a perfect fit,” said Paul Gross, director of the county’s Extension service. “Star of the West is a Michigan Company with an excellent reputation in grain handling, marketing and agronomy.  I’m pretty sure the Brown family did their homework to make sure their employees will be treated fairly as well as providing good services to their customers. I think Star of the West will continue to grow the business and make additional investments in the community.”

Brown Milling was founded in 1965 in the Denver Township community of Delwin after Ed Brown bought a mobile feed grinding service. It expanded into a fertilizer business in 1970, according to the Start of the West press release. The company purchased Rosebush Feed & Grain in 1983, Superior Fertilizer in 1987 and Shepherd Elevator in 1991.

Star of the West was founded 151 years ago as a single flour mill. It has since expanded to five mills in four states, including Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and New York.
